We all had fun entering Nellsar’s Crafty Creature Competition here at Lukestone Care Home – the challenge being to create a unique creature from recycled and repurposed materials which represented us and our Home.
Our entry: A Phoenix
At first, our residents and team members experimented with other Crafty Creatures such as a jellyfish and a butterfly before we decided on our final idea, Lukestone’s Phoenix.
For our Crafty Creature, we used materials such as a cardboard box for sketching the body of the phoenix, empty squash bottles to make its body, plastic bags, colourful handmade plastic pom-poms (from old summer fete decorations), old newspapers and a biscuit box. Most of these were used before and recycled items.

Our story
We chose the Phoenix bird as it symbolises how our Home and team have worked so hard in unity to bring our Home to its glorious days and even better. Lukestone’s journey hasn’t always been easy. After a challenging period, our team pulled together and rebuilt stronger than ever, full of life.
The Phoenix represents bright colours indicating happiness and its glowing multicolours represent our diversity, bringing joy and life to our residents. Our team has gracefully delivered person-centred care, truly reflecting the core values of Nellsar. As the Phoenix has risen, we are proud with what we have so far achieved here at Lukestone.
The Phoenix’s name is Joshe, in memory of our dear resident Josephine who recently passed away. She embodied strength and courage as she lived through years full of life.
Our entry was one of the runners up in the competition and was commended for its symbolism and being in memory of our dear resident. Congratulations and well done to everyone who took part in creating our fantastic Phoenix!
