Care Home in Kent, Staplehurst
Charm and character
Abbotsleigh Care Centre is spacious and bright with a modern, yet traditional feel and décor throughout. All visitors to the Home are welcomed into a large reception area with relaxed seating and refreshments. You will notice straight away the wonderful wall art and decorations on display, most of which have been created by our residents. This personal touch helps give Abbotsleigh the charm and character that’s evident throughout the Home.
Bedrooms and en-suites have been decorated to a very high standard and we help residents to make their rooms their own, with furniture and decorations of their choice. Abbotsleigh is spaciously divided across two floors and lift access makes it easy for our ladies and gentlemen to make the most of all indoor and outdoor spaces.
Our lounge areas are large and sunny, with stunning floor to ceiling windows and comfortable seating. These communal areas are perfect for enjoying some relaxation time or activities, and along with two separate dining rooms, our residents have every opportunity to join in with social events or partake in their own interests and hobbies.
Set in rural woodland
As you approach the tree-lined lane to Abbotsleigh, it’s hard not to be taken aback by the Home’s woodland setting. With a front decking and seating area (which is also a constant sunspot!) and extensive rear gardens, our residents are able to enjoy these calm and peaceful areas all year round. Many of our bedrooms also overlook the gardens and tranquil surroundings.
For avid gardeners and those who like to potter in the greenhouse, our residents can while away the hours potting plants or tending to the herbs. Others simply prefer playing garden games with some good food and a cold drink in the sunshine. We welcome family and friends to join us anytime and our summer barbeques are always a good excuse for a get together.
Recreation and leisure
No two days (or sometimes hours) are ever the same at Abbotsleigh. Our Recreation and Well-Being team work throughout the week to provide a huge range of events and activities for our ladies and gentlemen to enjoy. We take time to really get to know our residents’ personal interests and hobbies and make sure that everyone has the chance to get involved with as many activities as they’d like.
Being in the heart of the Kent countryside, we’re lucky to be close to so many places of natural beauty and make good use of our minibus for trips out and about. We can often be seen browsing at Millbrook Garden Centre, enjoying lunch at Frankie’s Café and chatting over cake and coffee or even taking in the views of the River Medway aboard a Kingfisher boat trip.
We also open our doors to a variety of music entertainers and performers, local school choirs and, in the summer months, horses are even trotted down our driveway for residents to meet outside and feed them apples and carrots.
On any given day our lounges are filled with arts and crafts, bingo, horse racing, movies and even armchair Olympics and Zumba – a firm favourite with both residents and team members! We also pull out all the stops to celebrate special days throughout the year including Valentines, Easter, Halloween and Christmas, not forgetting birthdays and special anniversaries. Naturally, these occasions usually involve decorations and cake!

A shared Nellsar culture
As part of a group of Care Homes, we are extremely proud of our caring, supportive culture which embodies empathy, equity, professionalism and continuous improvement. Our shared values focus on the individual – from residents to team members – creating an inclusive environment with both residents and team members at the heart of what we do every day.
A home with a personal touch and great food
Creating a real home-from-home environment for our residents is at the forefront of everything we do. Our Housekeeping and Maintenance teams keep all rooms and outside spaces clean, bright and in tip-top condition. No job is too big or too small to add those personal touches that make our residents feel welcome and relaxed.
Our love of good food is supported by our team of Chefs, Cooks and Kitchen and Dining Assistants. Menus are changed regularly and are created around the specific preferences of our residents, in order to offer choice and variety every day. We source local fruit and vegetables to prepare our home-cooked meals and our nearby butcher is renowned for making the best sausages for miles!
Mealtimes are always a social occasion, although our residents are welcome to eat wherever they feel comfortable. Friends and family can dine with us at any time and our special themed menu days certainly attract a lot of interest.
Also, our Nutrition and Wellness Manager, Leni, works closely with our Chefs and Nutrition Champions to ensure that everyone’s dietary requirements are met, and that food is used to support the ongoing health and well-being of each of our residents.
Nellsar Care and Cookery Book
Pioneers in the Care Catering industry, the Nellsar Care and Cookery Book celebrates our person-centred care catering and nutritional support. We also share some of our residents’ favourite seasonal recipes and an insight into the wonderful cooking clubs in our Care Homes.
Technology and relaxation
Each week we also provide ‘Namaste’ sessions, transforming our lounge into a beautiful and relaxed space with scent diffusers, colourful decorations, flowers, drinks and fresh fruit. Our ladies and gentlemen can then choose to enjoy a head or foot massage, or simply relax in a wonderfully calm and restful environment.
A dedicated team
Abbotsleigh’s Manager, Alina, has been with Nellsar since 2017 and is immensely proud of all of her team members who ensure that the needs of all our residents are met by providing a caring, compassionate and fun environment every single day. Some members of the Laundry Team and Care Team have worked at Abbotsleigh for over ten years – a ‘home from home’ for them as much as our residents!
In 2018 Alina was a proud finalist for the Care Home Manager Award at The Great British Care Awards, which recognise excellence in the care field. Of course, we are in no doubt of the hard work and commitment from our Managers, but this nomination was naturally the cherry on the cake for Alina. We were also delighted to have received a ‘Commend’ accreditation in 2020 from the Gold Standards Framework, a programme focusing for providing excellent care.
Fundraising is close to everyone’s heart at Abbotsleigh, with special events and competitions held throughout the year in support of charities such the Alzheimer’s Society, including a member of our Recreation and Well-Being team who shaved her head and raised over £1,000 for Macmillan!
The support and involvement we receive from family and friends is marvellous and we hold regular Relatives Meetings to share news, discuss ideas, listen to feedback and ensure that everyone is involved with the continuing care of your loved-ones.
If you would like to visit us here at Abbotsleigh, meet the team or speak to Alina, please feel free to come along any time. Or if you prefer, call us on 01580 891314.
Senior Care Assistant Simona Moise wins ‘Care Home Worker’ award at The Great British Care Awards 2019
Congratulations to Simona Moise! Everyone at Abbotsleigh Care Home are extremely proud that their dedicated Senior Care Assistant was crowned a winner at the annual South East Great British Care Awards 2019 in the Care Home Worker category. Simona’s support, compassion and person-centred caring are truly to be commended and the whole team were delighted with her well-deserved win.
