In September we all celebrated The National Day of Arts in Care Homes and took the opportunity to stimulate our senses – visual, hearing and olfactory.
We created a nice sensory experience for free artistic expression on our tables which we covered in drawing paper, so our ladies and gents could have fun experimenting with creativity. On the paper we used aromatic oils including lavender, orange and eucalyptus to stimulate our olfactory senses and help us to relax. We also put out tea lights to warm up the atmosphere, and we listened to relaxing music.
Our Activities Lead Mihaela brought in her variety of marker pens and encouraged our residents to draw anything they would like. She also brought some prompts from her sketch books for the occasion.
Expressing ourselves through art can bring cognitive stimulation and improved communication. Art activities shared in groups also encourages social interaction and a sense of community, and it was wonderful to see so many residents engaged in the day – our Lukestone little artists!
